OLC Kids Summer Chess Camp (for ages 6 to 13) is a week-long half-day camp consisting of chess games and instruction. We have 4 sessions to choose from (see Scheduling below). The camp starts at 8:30am (PT) and ends at 11:30am (PT).

Due to the size of the venue, we will only allow a total of 10 students per session. Please sign up as soon as possible before spots are taken.

* Some basic chess knowledge is recommended for beginner chess players.

* Beginner & Unrated players have a chess rating of below 700 or don't have a rating.

* Intermediate & Advanced players have a chess rating of 700 & above.

About Our Camp Coach

(Aaron Probst)

I am Aaron Probst. I have been playing chess competitively since second grade, and in fourth and fifth grade, I was co-state champion for Washington. In high school, I took a break from chess to focus on homework and other clubs, but began coming back to chess during the pandemic. Since then, my rating has grown to 1890 USCF, and in October 2024, I became the co-champion for the Portland Chess Club, tying for first place with Jerry Sherrard.

Three years ago, I began work as a summer camp and after school counselor through the YMCA, once running an after school chess camp. I then worked frequently with elementary students as a substitute para educator, before becoming a full time paraeducator with the GATE program.

I have loved chess ever since I first began playing, and I am excited to now be sharing that love of the game with students here at the Orenco Learning Club! I hope they find just as much joy on the 64 squares as I have!

Coach Aaron is currently the instructor of the in-person Kids Chess Club and Advanced Chess Club at OLC.

Chess For Beginners & Unrated (Campers will learn chess pieces; beginner level openings, endings & tactics; solve beginner level chess puzzles; and how to write chess notations. They will play chess in the following formats: free play, random chess, and an UNRATED chess tournament during the last day of camp with prizes).
Chess For Intermediate & Advanced (Campers will learn intermediate/advanced level tactics, openings & endings; solve intermediate/advanced level chess puzzles; how to write chess notations; and will continue to improve their games. They will play chess in the following formats: free play, random chess, 4-player chess, bughouse chess, and an UNRATED chess tournament during the last day of camp with prizes)

If spots are filled up, your child will be put on a WAITLIST with a position number (ex. 1st in line). You will be notified via phone or email if there are any withdrawals based on your position number. If you decline to take the spot, we will contact the next person in line on the Waitlist.
If, for whatever reason, your child cannot make it to the summer camp after being registered, you will receive a full refund if you inform us 5 or more days before camp starts. If you cancel less than 5 days prior to start of camp, we will only give a partial refund. (We'll take off $50 from the total paid amount.)
If a camp is cancelled by Orenco Learning Club due to low registration, full refund will be given to those who have already registered.
