OLC KIDS SUMMER CAMP
July & August 2025
8:00am to 4:00pm
OLC Kids Summer Camp (for ages 8 to 13) is a week-long full day camp consisting of chess, robotics, microscopy and Rubik's cube instruction and play. We have 4 sessions to choose from. The camp starts at 8:00am (PT) and ends at 4:00pm (PT). However, we also offer morning and afternoon half-day options.
Due to the size of the venue, we will only allow a total of 10 students per session. Please sign up as soon as possible before spots are taken.
*Some basic chess knowledge is recommended for chess players.
**Basic computer skills (typing at a reasonable pace, copying/cutting, pasting & saving files) is required for the Arduino (robotics) part of the camp.

Deadline to register is the Friday (4pm) before the start of each session.
Session 1 (July 28-Aug. 1) deadline is on July 25.
Session 2 (Aug. 4-8) deadline is on Aug. 1.
About Our Camp Coach
(Dan Birt)
Dan finished his undergraduate studies at California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) and has a Doctorate in Material Science at University of Texas-Austin.
He, along with his wife (Audrey), founded Orenco Learning Club in 2019. He is currently the instructor of the in-person Kids Chess Club and Arduino Club at OLC.
WHAT WE'LL COVER:
- Chess (Campers will learn beginner and intermediate level openings & tactics, and how to write chess notations. They will play chess in the following formats: free play, random chess, and an UNRATED chess tournament during the last day of camp with prizes).
- Arduino programming / Robotics (Campers will use the ELEGOO Starter Kit and the downloaded Arduino software to build simple electronics.)
- Rubik's cube (in Session 1) (Campers will learn how to solve the Rubik's cube to master the 8 steps to become cube solvers.)
- Microscopy (in Session 2) (Campers will learn the different types of microscope and their parts, how to use them properly, and how to gather samples for viewing and studying.)
SCHEDULING:
- Session 1 : July 28 to Aug. 1, 2025 (Chess, Arduino & Rubik's Cube)
- Session 2: Aug. 4 to Aug. 8, 2025 (Chess, Arduino & Microscopy)

FULL DAY* - 8:00am-4:00pm
AM ONLY* (Chess) - 8:00am-12:00pm
PM ONLY (Arduino, Rubik's Cube or Microscopy) - 12:00pm-4:00pm
*Lunch break is from 11:00am-12:oopm. Students are expected to bring their own lunch.
PRICING:
- $450.00 (Full day - for current OLC members)
- $500.00 (Full day - for non-members)
- $225.00 (Half-day - for current OLC members)
- $250.00 (Half-day - for non-members)
Campers will receive their own camp T-shirt, chess scorebook, Arduino ELEGOO Starter Kit and Rubik's cube on the first day of camp. They will use the chess sets, laptops and microscopes from OLC.
WAITLIST & CANCELLATIONS:
- If spots are filled up, your child will be put on a WAITLIST with a position number (ex. 1st in line). You will be notified via phone or email if there are any withdrawals based on your position number. If you decline to take the spot, we will contact the next person in line on the Waitlist.
- If, for whatever reason, your child cannot make it to the entire summer camp after being registered, please give us a call or send us an email at least 3 days before the start of camp and we'll give you a full refund (if you've already paid). The available space will then be given to the next person in line on the WAITLIST.
