Tournament Details

  • Players (ages 6 to 13) are welcome with current United States Chess Federation (USCF) memberships. (Not yet a USCF member? Register and purchase memberships here.)
  • Tournament is scheduled inside Orenco Learning Club Bookstore, 6281 NE Cherry Dr, Hillsboro, OR 97124.
  • Tournament starts at 9:00am. Please arrive before or by 8:45am. 
  • Estimated tournament hours: 9:00am-2:00pm
  • Format: Quad format / Round-Robin. 25-min. with 10-sec. increments per round. Players are placed into group of 4 players based on their USCF Rating. Every player in each quad will play against all the other players in the quad for a total of 3 games.
  • The Tournament will follow USCF Rules.
  • Tournament winners (1st place for each quad) will receive medals. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and a snack/gift bag from OLC Bookstore.
  • What to bring: Tournament players should bring their chess notebooks/scorebooks and pencils for notations. (We also sell them at the bookstore.) Players are required to notate unless one of the players is under 5 minutes.
  • Chess sets and chess clocks are provided by OLC Bookstore.
  • Entry Fee: $25 for current OLC Kids Chess Club members, $30 for non-members
  • Advanced online registration is required. We will not accept registrations on the day of the event.

  • Once the registration form (with current USCF membership) has been received, we will send you an email with the payment link and instructions.

  • Notes: 1) Health & Safety: If you or your child are sick (COVID, flu, cold, cough, stomach bug, rashes, any other infections), please do not come to the tournament. Contact us via email ([email protected]) and we will fully refund your registration fee. 2) Spectators: Seating is very limited for spectators due to the venue's size, although spectators are allowed, but are required to keep quiet and not distract the players. 3) Electronics: Players are not allowed to use mobile devices and other electronics while the tournament is on-going. Please leave them to your parents / guardians. 4) Parking: Please use the street parking along NE Cherry Dr and NE Orenco Station Pkwy, or the public parking garages* at Vector Apartments and Rowlock Apartments. (*You need a two-hour free parking ticket in those parking garages. If you go over 2 hours, you need to pay additional fees per hour.) Please give enough time to find a parking spot.

  • SIDE EVENT! Blitz Tournament (USCF Blitz-rated) will follow right after the main tournament. 3-minute game with 2-second increments per side. Double rounds, meaning each player will play their opponent twice. 4 rounds total. Interested players may pre-register online along with their main tournament registration or they may register onsite. An additional Blitz tournament fee of $10 will be collected for this event. This side event is OPTIONAL (for those who only want to play after the main tournament is over and would like to have a USCF Blitz rating).

About The Tournament Director

Jerry Sherrard is a private chess coach. With over 15 years tournament experience, he has attained the USCF CM title. After teaching chess classes with Chess Vision and Mozek Games, he decided to work privately. He is currently working with coach GM Sam Khanin to advance his chess playing and coaching. Since 2010, Jerry has enjoyed coaching people of all ages to reach their potential in our beloved ancient game. He is the current chess instructor of OLC Kids Chess Club (In-Person) at OLC Bookstore.
