KIDS CHESS TOURNAMENT 2026



Tournament Details

  • Players (ages 6 to 13) are welcome with current United States Chess Federation (USCF) memberships. (Not yet a USCF member? Register and purchase memberships here.)
  • Tournament is scheduled inside the Party/Events Room of Early Learning Matters (ELM) Preschool, 5121 NE Elam Young Pkwy, Suite A, Hillsboro, OR 97124.
  • Tournament starts at 9:00am. Please arrive before or by 8:45am. 
  • Estimated tournament hours: 9:00am-2:00pm
  • Format: Quad format / Round-Robin. 25-min. with 10-sec. increments per round. Players are placed into group of 4 players based on their USCF Rating. Every player in each quad will play against all the other players in the quad for a total of 3 games.
  • The Tournament will follow USCF Rules.
  • Tournament winners will receive medals. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and a snack/gift bag from OLC.
  • What to bring: Tournament players should bring their chess notebooks/scorebooks and pencils for notations. (We will sell them at the venue for $5 cash only.) Players are required to notate their games unless one of the players is under 5 minutes.
  • Chess sets and chess clocks are provided by Orenco Learning Club.
  • Entry Fee: $30 for current & former OLC Kids Chess Club members, $35 for non-members
  • Advanced online registration is required. We will not accept registrations on the day of the event.

  • Once the registration form (with current USCF membership) has been received, we will send you an email with the payment link and instructions.

  • Notes: 1) Health & Safety: If you or your child are sick (COVID, flu, cold, cough, stomach bug, rashes, any other infections), please do not come to the tournament. Contact us via email ([email protected]) and we will fully refund your registration fee. 2) Spectators: Spectators are allowed, but are required to keep quiet and not distract and go near the players while playing. 3) Electronics: Players are not allowed to use mobile devices and other electronics while the tournament is on-going. Please leave them to your parents / guardians. 4) Privacy: We will take photographs of the players during the games to post in our website, digital newsletter, and/or social media pages. If you prefer that we not post your child's photos, please let us know before the tournament starts. (The same procedure applies when you're taking photos of your child with other kids in the picture.)

About The Tournament Director

Jerry Sherrard is a private chess coach. With over 15 years tournament experience, he has attained the USCF CM title. After teaching chess classes with Chess Vision and Mozek Games, he decided to work privately. He is currently working with coach GM Sam Khanin to advance his chess playing and coaching. Since 2010, Jerry has enjoyed coaching people of all ages to reach their potential in our beloved ancient game.
